Beyond The Wall is The Art Institute of Portland's first
graphic design portfolio.

This book was created to allow students at The Art Institute of Portland to showcase their work in a new way.

Normally at the end of each term, student work is hung on the walls throughout the school. This book is a way for that work to be recognized and featured beyond the walls and onto the desks of future employers.

With Adam Van Noy‘s help we got the word out and collected work from other students in the graphic design program. With all student work submitted we put them into 7 categories including Illustration, Page Layout, Typography, Branding, Advertising, Package Design, and Environmental Design. Instructors helped by selecting which student work would be featured or removed from the book.

To help create a unique look I designed a font for use in the chapter headings which i’m calling Rythym, because it flows in a fluid and rhythmic way. We also created a section for Graphic Designer of the Year and two Student Highlights to allow particularly great students to stand out among the rest. In the end we created a truly amazing book that everyone in the graphic design department at AIPD can be proud of.
Jason Watkins, an instructor at my school, took on the responsibility of guiding us through the awesome process of creating this publication.
Melissa Duffy graduated this year and was selected as graphic designer of the year. Check her out at melissaduffydesign.com
Jason Cochran was selected as one of the two highlighed students with an interview and a short section of spreads dedicated to his work. jasoncochrandesign.com
Makenzie Cooper was the second highlighted student. makenziecooper.com
Following the opening pages there are 7 sections of design work, starting with illustration.
Each of these 7 sections has a "best in show" awarded to one student. Best illustration in show went to Thomas Meyers.
Best typography in show went to Harben Lachica.
Best branding in show was awarded to recent graduate Kurt Rasos.
Best package design in show was awarded to recent graduate Kevin Prieto.
Best environmental design in show was awarded to a group project.
The student index contains portraits of students along with the page numbers they were featured on, graduation dates, and website info.
The cover was designed by Peter Adels, an extremely talented guy who had a ton of his work published in the book.
